What to Expect with Dental Braces

Dental braces come with a unique experience, and it may take a while to get used to the feeling. Knowing what to expect after getting braces will help you prepare for the process. With the proper information, you will not be confused or nervous when you finally get the braces. Although it requires time and effort, the result is worth the trouble.

On Appearance

The type of braces the patient gets will determine how much their appearance will change. Traditional metal braces consist of silver metal bracket connected to the teeth, and force is applied through the metal archwire connected to the bracket. Some braces have customizable rubber bands connecting the brackets and wire.

If the patient opts for clear braces, the appearance will be more discreet. The only visible part of the braces is the thin metal archwire for moving the teeth into shape. Invisible braces are the most subtle options available. They are made of transparent aligner trays that fit on the teeth. The patient will get a new set weekly unlike the desired result is achieved.

On food

Patients can expect that their meal options will change. In the first days after getting braces, it is advisable to stick to soft foods like yogurt, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, lunchmeat and apple sauce. During the treatment, patients will need to avoid foods that stick easily to braces such as popcorn, bagels and soft candies. Hard foods like nuts and carrots can damage or shift braces. Sandwiches are also hard to bite and chew.

On discomfort

Patients may experience slight discomfort soon after getting braces. Their teeth might become more sensitive, and the new braces may cause bruises or sores in the mouth. The dull aching sensation is due to the gentle pressure on the teeth. The dentist will advise the patient to eat only soft foods such as soup, pasta and bananas in the first few days after getting braces. If pain persists, over-the-counter painkillers can help alleviate discomfort. A visit to the dentist may be necessary if the pain does not subside. Teeth sensitivity usually diminishes after a few days.

On maintenance

The general dentist will provide instructions on how to properly care for the braces. Brace wearers need to brush regularly and put in the extra effort. Use of Waterpik is advisable to get rid of food debris that may be trapped between the braces and teeth. Optimal oral hygiene is important to keep the teeth healthy throughout treatment.

The patient will also need to visit the dentist regularly to have their braces adjusted and for a thorough dental cleaning. The dentist will check the treatment progress and make a necessary recommendation. These follow-up appointments occur every eight to 10 weeks.

Final note

At first, the idea of getting braces can be disconcerting, especially if you do not know what to expect. When you visit the dentist for your appointment, be sure to ask any questions you have and prepare physically for your appointment. The dentist will try as much as possible to keep you comfortable. At the end of your treatment, you can be sure of the outcome – a perfect smile.
